Vaiśampāyana said: When the king expressed his desire to give his daughter to that great-souled Brāhmaṇa, all the assembled kings looked at each other and were filled with anger.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब राजा ने उस महान आत्मा वाले ब्राह्मण को अपनी बेटी देने की इच्छा व्यक्त की, तो इकट्ठे हुए सभी राजाओं ने एक-दूसरे की ओर देखा और क्रोध से भर गए।
The kings said, "We are assembled here and he passes us over like straw. He wishes to give Draupadī, supreme among women, to a Brāhmaṇa.

This evil-hearted one does not respect us. Let us kill him. He does not deserve our respect or veneration because of qualities of age.

On account of this, let us kill this wretch who insults kings and their sons. After inviting and entertaining in the proper fashion all the kings with food, he then shows them disrespect.

In this assembly of kings, which is like a conclave of the gods, can he not find a single king who is his equal?

The sacred texts clearly say that a svayaṃvara is for Kṣatriya-s; Brāhmana-s have no right in the choice of a husband.

Though that Brāhmaṇa has done injury to kings out of his impertinence and greed, he should not still be killed.
यद्यपि उस ब्राह्मण ने अपनी धृष्टता और लोभ के कारण राजाओं को हानि पहुंचाई है, फिर भी उसे नहीं मारना चाहिए।

आख़िरकार, हमारा राज्य, जीवन, धन, पुत्र, पौत्र और हमारी अन्य सारी संपत्ति ब्राह्मणों के लिए ही अस्तित्व में है।

Seeing those angry kings ruṣ at him with bows and arrows, Drupada was frightened and sought the protection of the Brāhmana-s.
उन क्रोधित राजाओं को धनुष और बाणों के साथ अपनी ओर दौड़ते देख द्रुपद भयभीत हो गये और उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों से सुरक्षा मांगी।
However, as those kings rushed at Drupada like mad elephants, Pāṇḍu's two sons, the great archers who conquered their enemies, advanced to repulse them.

With that tree, the mighty-armed Bhīmā, Pṛthā's son and the destroyer of enemies, stood next to Pārtha, bull among men and with long and thick arms, like Yāma with his terrible staff.

"हे संकर्षण! जिस योद्धा की चाल पागल बैल जैसी है और जिसके हाथ में 4 हाथ लंबा महान धनुष है, वह अर्जुन ही होगा। यदि मैं वासुदेव का पुत्र हूं, तो इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं हो सकता।
The warrior who has uprooted a tree with his strength and is instantly ready to repulse the kings is undoubtedly Vṛkodara. No other mortal on earth can perform such a feat today.
वह योद्धा जिसने अपने बल से एक वृक्ष को उखाड़ फेंका हो और राजाओं को खदेड़ने के लिए तुरंत तैयार हो गया हो, वह निस्संदेह वृकोदर है। आज पृथ्वी पर कोई अन्य प्राणी ऐसा पराक्रम नहीं कर सकता।
O Acyuta! The other one who left a while ago, with eyes like lotus petals, slender and with the gait of a powerful lion, humble, fair and with a long and shining nose, must have been Dharmarāja.
हे अच्युत! दूसरा जो थोड़ी देर पहले चला गया, कमल की पंखुड़ियों जैसी आंखें, पतला और शक्तिशाली शेर की चाल वाला, विनम्र, गोरा और लंबी और चमकदार नाक वाला, वह धर्मराज रहा होगा।

यौ तौ कुमाराविव कार्त्तिकेयौ; द्वावश्विनेयाविति मे प्रतर्कः मुक्ता हि तस्माज्जतुवेश्मदाहा;न्मया श्रुताः पाण्डुसुताः पृथा च
I am sure that the other two youths, each like Kartikeya, must have been sons of the two Aśvin-s. I had heard that Pāṇḍu's sons and Pṛthā had escaped from the fire in the house of lac."
